Today MALU Pork is the largest producer of pork in the Northern Cape & Free state area. MALU has turned into a diverse group of companies, involved from primary agriculture to producing some of the finest pork meat in South Africa.

We turned to them for some advice on growing a business over the years.

  • How did Malu Pork start out as a business?

We have been doing business in the meat industry for 48years.  A few years ago we realised that the demand for pork cuts are increasing, thus we started on a small scale and that is where the idea behind MALU PORK originated.

  • How long did it take to grow Malu Pork to where it is today?

The physical planning and building of the plant began a few years after we started MALU PORK and we are still growing and we hope to be producing at full capacity in the near future.

  • You build a new factory for your business, what made you decide that it is the right time to expand?

As described in question 1, the demand for pork cuts leads us to expand our Business.  The expansion of MALU gave us the opportunity to enter another part of the meat market.

  • What obstacles crossed your road in the process of expanding your business and how did you overcome it?

Expanding your business is always accompanied by obstacles.  Time was our biggest enemy, the operational date of the plant was 10 months later than our original planning.

  • Over the years of growing your business, what advice shaped your business?

“Elke ding het ‘n plek”, that is our CEO’s (Marius Malherbe) favourite quote.  If everything is in its place and the work environment is neat and organised it makes things easier to control.

  • What are the most valuable lessons you’ve learn in business?

Appoint the right people. Make sure you produce the best quality products. Choose your debtors well and give excellent service

  • What are the 3 biggest accomplishments in your business thus far?

Economy of scale took us to the next level to compete with smaller businesses

Building the Pork Deboning facility gave us the opportunity to add more value to our product

We are in a fortunate position to have an excellent team driving the business, and that is a huge accomplishment in itself.

  • What does success look like for Malu Pork?

There are not one, but many definitions for success.  Firstly is the most common definition of success in business terms is that a business is a success if it is making a profit and showing positive financial growth. Secondly, it is very important for MALU to create a safe and healthy working environment for all the employees.

These two factors will be used to measure MALU PORK’s success.

  • What plans do you have for Malu Pork’s future for growing the business?

Firstly we will focus on expanding the plant to reach full capacity.  When that is reached, the sky is the limit…

MALU PORK will definitely explore the option to export pork in the future.

  • What characteristics do you think an entrepreneur should have?

An entrepreneur should be driven, hardworking, promptly and organised.

  • If you could give any advice to an entrepreneur looking to grow their business, what would it be?

Growth and success don’t happen overnight. Do the right things right for a long time and you will be successful.
